Accountability is the secret sauce to coaching. I’ve been privileged to witness, huge, quick changes because of it.“and this is why ESPN came to my classroom to do an interview for documentary entitled the Morningside 5, and Corey Saffold.
I haven’t seen it personally, but remember when ESPN film crew came to my Banning High T.V Production class. There were so many crew members, that one of my student’s came to me and ask? Are they from “Cheaters.”? I told him, “Hell No, that impossible it 2003, and that show won’t be created for another 10 years, go sit down!” I was interviewed for one of Morningside 5, Corey Lamont Saffold. I recruited Corey in High school when I was an Assistant Basketball coach at Cal State Fullerton. He was a typical over rated, entitle AAU Basketball player who thought he was just going to walk into the NBA. He had a Scottie Pippen body with a Tin Man game “No !” He signs a schlorship to the University Oklahoma, only to transfers to Long Beach State, only to finish his senior season at CalState Dominguez Hills.
We bump heads when I was hired as an assistant coach at CalState Dominguez during his Senior season. The previous coaching staff recruited him, an
d treated like he was the Beyoncé of Div.II basketball. When I first met him, he thought he was Scottie Pippen, even wore his wrist band like Scottie. We were a brand new coaching staff trying to create a competitive culture for our players and that started in practice. Little did he know, my personality, and his personality was on a collision course. We used video, analytics to hold our players accountable for games, and practices. In short we fought for about 18 games, before he learn we were not going to accept mediocrity, and excuses as a part of our program. He eventually humbled himself, and conform and finished his senior season in Scottie Pippen form.
